You do not have to wait for a payment company
Payment companies hand out branded QR stickers to merchants who sign up with them. They work, but you wait for one, it carries their branding, and it ties your counter to one provider.
Your own sticker made from your UPI ID does the same job. Any app can pay it, and you can print a new one today.
Sizes that actually scan
Getting the size wrong is the usual reason a printed QR frustrates customers.
- Counter sticker, scanned from about arm's length: 5 to 8 cm across.
- Wall or shutter, scanned from a metre or two: 15 cm or larger. As a rule of thumb, the QR should be about a tenth of the distance it is scanned from.
- Product or shelf label: 2 cm is the practical floor, and only in decent light.
- Delivery bag or auto rickshaw: 10 cm or larger, because it is often scanned in poor light at an angle.
Leave a clear white margin on all four sides. A QR crowded up against a border or artwork fails far more often than a small one with room to breathe.
Printing it so it lasts
- Use the SVG download for anything going to a print shop. It stays sharp at any size, which a screenshot will not.
- Matte lamination, not gloss. Gloss throws back the overhead light in exactly the spot the camera needs, and a glare spot in the middle of a QR stops it reading.
- Vinyl for anything outdoors or anywhere it will be wiped down. Paper stickers on a counter last a few weeks.
- Print black on white. Coloured and reversed QRs look better and scan worse.
- Add your shop name and UPI ID in readable text beside the code, so a customer whose camera is not cooperating can still pay by typing.
Order one proof first and scan it with two different phones before committing to a batch.
Protecting the sticker from being swapped
QR swap fraud means somebody pasting their own sticker over yours. Customers pay in good faith and you find out at closing time. It is the one risk that comes specifically from a printed QR.
- Mount it behind acrylic or glass, or inside a frame, so nothing can be stuck on top.
- Look at it when you open and when you close. Ten seconds a day.
- Put a mark of your own on it, a stamp or a signature across a corner, so a replacement is obvious to you even if it is not to a customer.
- Ask customers to show you the completed payment screen rather than a screenshot.
- Keep an eye on the pattern of payments. A quiet afternoon that should not have been quiet is worth checking.
