How to get a UPI ID (you cannot generate one)

A UPI ID is issued by your bank or payment app and linked to your account. No website can generate one. Here is how to get yours in a few minutes.

The short answer

You cannot generate a UPI ID, and no website can generate one for you. A UPI ID is issued by a bank or a payment app and tied to a real bank account. Anything offering to create one for you is either confused or trying to collect your details.

Getting one takes about five minutes inside a payment app, and it is free.

What you need first

  • A bank account with a bank that supports UPI, which is effectively all of them in India.
  • A mobile number registered with that bank account. This is the part that catches people out: the number in your phone must be the same one the bank has on record.
  • A SIM for that number in the phone you are using, because the app sends a verification message from it.
  • Your debit card details, used once to set your UPI PIN.

The steps

  1. Install a UPI app. Any of GPay, PhonePe, Paytm, BHIM, Amazon Pay, or your own bank's app will do, and they all connect to the same UPI network.
  2. Register with the mobile number linked to your bank account. The app verifies it automatically.
  3. Choose your bank from the list. The app finds accounts held against your number.
  4. Set your UPI PIN using your debit card number and expiry date. This PIN authorises payments leaving your account. It is not your card PIN and nobody else ever needs it.
  5. Your UPI ID is created at that point. Look under your profile for "UPI ID" or "Payment address".

What a UPI ID looks like

Two parts either side of an @ sign, such as anitarao@okaxis. The part before the @ identifies you. The part after is the bank handle of whichever bank or app issued it. Handles like @ybl, @okhdfcbank, and @paytm are normal and are not typos.

You can hold several UPI IDs across different apps, all paying into the same bank account, or into different accounts. Most apps also let you set a custom prefix, subject to it being free.

Getting one without a debit card

Several banks now support UPI PIN setup using Aadhaar based verification instead of a debit card, if your Aadhaar is linked to the account and your mobile number is registered with Aadhaar. Check inside your bank's own app, which supports this more often than the third party apps do.

Common reasons it fails

  • The mobile number does not match. The number in the phone must match the one registered with the bank, exactly. This is the most frequent cause by a wide margin.
  • The verification message cannot be sent. Dual SIM phones sometimes send it from the wrong SIM. Check which SIM the app is using.
  • The debit card details are rejected. Use the last six digits and the expiry printed on the card, and check that the card is active.
  • No account is found. Your bank may hold an old number. Updating it needs a branch visit or your bank's own app.

Then what

Once you have a UPI ID you can receive money by sharing it, or by turning it into a QR code that anyone can scan. The generator on this site does that in your browser, free, with nothing saved.

One safety point worth repeating

Your UPI ID is safe to share publicly. It is a payment address, like a phone number. Printing it on a shop sign is entirely normal.

Your UPI PIN is the opposite. It authorises money leaving your account and nobody, including your bank, ever needs it. Receiving money never requires a PIN, so any request for one is fraud.
